The Explorer Club At Spennymoor School

This club has proved very popular with students. It is aimed at providing an opportunity for exploration and discovery by our students. Teachers give up some of their Saturdays and do not get paid for the time they give to this activity. There have been many visits so far and to a wide range of locations. These have included Housesteads Roman Fort, Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, Tower Knowe Visitor Centre, Arbeia Roman Fort, Darlington Railway Museum, Richmond Castle, Whitby, Whitby Abbey, Chomley's House Visitor Centre, the replica HM Bark Endeavour, the Royal Armouries at Leeds, Thackray Medical Museum, the North York Moors Railway, the National Railway Museum, York Art Gallery, Clifford's Tower and York City Walls. A recent survey of students showed that 64% of our students have taken part in one of our trips over the last two years...... this is a high proportion for a Saturday activity. Another 46 students and 7 (unpaid) staff visited the Royal Armouries at Leeds on Saturday 18th November and had a fantastic time. As well as the five floors of outstanding historic displays, students enjoyed a hunting birds display featuring a barn owl, harris hawk and a merlin.
