YEAR 8 WHOLE YEAR GROUP EXPEDITION TO THE DURHAM COAST
Planned for the end of October, this whole day fieldwork visit will be a cross-curricular event with integrated input from the Geography, Science, Technology, Art, History, Art and the ICT departments. Watch out for more details.... or ask your Year Manager....
CHILD SPONSORSHIP
We continue to raise money, with the efforts of the School Council, to be able to sponsor and therefore improve the lives of 3 children from around the world, plus their families and communities. Jhorna is an 9 years old girl from poverty-stricken Bangladesh in Asia, Auma is a 11 years old girl from poor rural Kenya in Africa, and Jefferson is an 9 years old boy from one of the poorest housing areas in the world, located in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in South America. Our monies are already making a difference. We will keep you informed of their progress.
MEGABEASTS ROADSHOW
At the end of January 2009, we will once again be experiencing the visit of the 'Megabeasts Roadshow' of Equatorial Rain Forests animals. All of previous Year 8 groups have enjoyed a fantastic day, actually bringing to life their studies on Rainforests and biodiversity. Amongst the creatures that the students have the opportunity to handle are giant water snails, giant cockroaches, enormous Monitor Lizard and a Python! In addition they will be impressed by a giant Cane toad and a huge Goliath Tarantula. A fantastic day will once again be had by all!
THE SPENNYMOOR SCHOOL RAINFOREST RESERVE
Plans have been on hold for a liitle while, but are once again progressing towards a fund-raising attempt to purchase an area of tropical rainforest in Ecuador in South America. If we can raise £5000, then we will be able to have a reserve named after the school. We would donate the land to the World Land Trust to preserve on our behalf.
Rainforest clearance is directly affecting our global environment. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and help combat global warming which itself causes climate change. Therefore we have an opportunity to help save the planet.
We will be having fund-raising events and asking the businesses of Spennymoor to assist in this practical initiative in Global Citizenship.... after all, we all live on 'Spaceship Earth', breathe the same air and drink the same water!
